Vol 1(1): First issue background
Focus: Free Speech in Australia
Australia is believed to have a freedom of speech. Yet expression is restricted by defamation and contempt laws and hedged by narrow media ownership. Ministers lied about refugees who were said to have thrown their children overboard. Defence officials warned of non existent Wepons of Mass Destruction. Now Australian journalists are facing a raft of new restrictions on what they can report, resulting from terrorism, industrial relations and even immigration regulations. Is former Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, right when he says that Australia May be entering a new dark age?
